The healthcare question on this coast is a driving question. The clinics exist. The issue is which one you can reach, from which gate, on an ordinary afternoon. This page names the facilities buyers actually use and the drive times checked on October 15, 2026. It does not print hours or telephone numbers. Those change, and a wrong number on a real-estate site is a worse service than a name and a map. See Reserva Conchal.
The private hospital at Huacas
Hospital Metropolitano’s Huacas headquarters sits in Cabo Velas, next to the Huacas fire station. It is a private hospital with emergency care, a pharmacy, general medicine, gynecology, and check-ups on its published description. From Reserva Conchal and from Flamingo it is the close option: about 10 to 15 minutes from Conchal in ordinary traffic. From Las Catalinas the same hospital is about 27 minutes. That gap is one of the practical differences between living in the Conchal gate and living in the town to the south.
Tamarindo has Guanacaste Medical Center, with imaging among the services described publicly. BeachSide Clinic runs a Huacas location and a Flamingo office. Confirm what each site actually offers the week you need it. A website’s service list is not a guarantee that a specialist is in the building on a Sunday.
Liberia, and why “45 minutes” was wrong
The public hospital in Liberia is Hospital Dr. Enrique Baltodano. From Conchal it is about 1 hour and 24 minutes. From Las Catalinas it is about 1 hour and 22 minutes. Older descriptions that put Liberia 45 minutes from Conchal were optimistic. If a medical plan depends on that public hospital, budget the longer drive, and budget the private hospital in Huacas as the first stop for anything that should not wait an hour and a half.
Private hospitals in Costa Rica usually want payment or proof of insurance before they treat you. U.S. Medicare and Medicaid do not pay for care abroad. An air ambulance, if you ever need one, is described by the State Department as costing on the order of $50,000, which is why evacuation insurance is the policy retirees buy and then hope not to use. Residents enroll in CAJA, the public system, and many keep a private policy as well. CAJA’s current contribution table should be confirmed with the CCSS; a percentage is not printed here.
How to use this when you are choosing a house
If a parent is moving with you, drive the Huacas route from the actual house, not from the beach club, at the time of day you would be driving it. Ten minutes from the Conchal gate is not ten minutes from the back of a large community. Do the same from Las Catalinas if that is the town you prefer for its walkability. The trade is real: a more urban beach town, a longer drive to the private hospital.
Bring the insurance question into the purchase, not into the first emergency. Vacancy clauses, a local private policy, and evacuation cover are three different contracts. The home-insurance note in this FAQ is the place to start on the building. The medical policy is a separate binder. Chris can tell you which communities his clients actually use for routine care. He will not guess a clinic’s hours.
