Costa Rica's Guanacaste province has some of the world's most beautiful beaches. Whether you're looking to swim, surf, snorkel, or simply relax with a book, the Gold Coast delivers.
Here's my guide to the best beaches near our premium properties.
Playa Flamingo
Character: Protected, calm bay, upscale, sophisticated Best For: Swimming, boating, dining, families Water Conditions: Extremely calm, perfect for swimmers and boaters Nearby Dining: Marina restaurants, upscale options Popular Activities: Yacht charter, snorkeling, sunset drinks
Playa Flamingo is the centerpiece of the community of the same name. The protected bay creates nearly perfect swimming conditions year-round. The marina culture attracts boating enthusiasts and creates a sophisticated seaside atmosphere.
The beach itself is relatively small, but the bay water is clear and calm. Perfect for families, swimmers, or anyone wanting a safe, sheltered swimming experience.
Playa Conchal
Character: Pearl-shell white sand, snorkeling, natural beauty Best For: Snorkeling, photography, natural beauty Water Conditions: Clear, calm in bay areas, moderate waves beyond Nearby Services: Limited (within gated community), excellent in Reserva Conchal Unique Feature: White "conchal" (shell) sand, unique appearance
Playa Conchal is one of Costa Rica's most visually striking beaches, famous for its white shell-sand composition. The beach is literally made of millions of small shells, creating brilliant white sand.
Water is clearer than most Gold Coast beaches, and snorkeling opportunities are excellent in the rocky areas. The beach is part of Reserva Conchal community, so it's more exclusive and less crowded than public beaches.
The downside: limited public services. No beach bars or restaurants directly on the sand. If you're in Reserva Conchal, this is incredible. If you're outside the community, access is more difficult.
Tamarindo Beach
Character: Surf town, active, touristy, developed Best For: Surfing, nightlife, dining, young people Water Conditions: Consistent waves, beach break Nearby Services: Abundant, restaurants, bars, shops everywhere Popular Activities: Surfing, paddleboarding, nightlife
Tamarindo is Costa Rica's most famous beach town. The beach itself is a long, wide, sandy beach with consistent surf breaks. The town has exploded with restaurants, bars, and shops catering to surfers and tourists.
The vibe is youthful, energetic, and international. If you want a beach town experience with nightlife and dining, Tamarindo delivers. If you want peace and quiet, Tamarindo isn't your beach.
Great for: Surfers, young people, investors seeking tourist rental income Less great for: Quiet lovers, traditional retirees
Playa Grande
Character: Undeveloped, wild, turtle nesting, natural Best For: Nature lovers, photographers, hiking Water Conditions: Strong currents, rough waves, swimming caution Nearby Services: Minimal, closest town is Las Catalinas Unique Feature: Leatherback turtle nesting site, pristine nature
Playa Grande is one of Costa Rica's most important sea turtle nesting sites. The beach is large, undeveloped, and wild-feeling. Protected turtle nesting areas mean seasonal restrictions on beach access.
Water is rough—strong rip currents make swimming inadvisable. But the beach itself is stunningly beautiful and feels remote despite being accessible.
Perfect for: Nature photographers, hikers, turtle enthusiasts Not for: Swimmers seeking calm water
Las Catalinas Beach
Character: Master-planned, newer community, walkable Best For: Families, mixed-use lifestyle, community feel Water Conditions: Moderate, sheltered by point break Nearby Services: Developing, town center planned Community Feel: Strong walkability, mixed-use development
Las Catalinas is a newer, master-planned community with beach town design. The beach itself is pleasant and moderately sheltered by a point break.
The real appeal is the community design: walkable town center, restaurants, shops, and residential all planned to work together. It's more curated than organic beach town vibes but appeals to people wanting community structure.
Perfect for: Families seeking walkable beach living, investors in master-planned communities
Papagayo Bay Beaches
Character: Resort-based, luxury, branded, curated Best For: Resort guests, all-inclusive seekers Water Conditions: Calm, protected bays Nearby Services: Five-star resort amenities Unique Feature: Four Seasons, upscale resorts, branded experience
Papagayo Bay includes several coves and beaches within the resort framework. Access is primarily through resort membership or high-end resort stays.
The appeal is convenience: professional infrastructure, top-tier dining, security, and amenities. The beaches themselves are beautiful but curated and crowd-managed by resorts.
Perfect for: Resort lifestyle seekers, luxury travelers
Seasonal Considerations
Dry Season (December-April)
Best for beach time: Sunny, minimal rain, calm seas, perfect conditions Crowds: Maximum tourism season, busier beaches Temperature: 80-85°F, warm and pleasant
Green Season (May-November)
Best for: Fewer crowds, dramatic skies, afternoon showers refresh the beach Conditions: Rougher seas, bigger waves (better for surfers) Temperature: 80-90°F, humid, hotter
Best Time to Visit
December-March: Optimal beach conditions, but busiest season April: Shoulder season, still good, fewer crowds, slightly cheaper May-November: Green season, dramatic nature, rainfall but fewer people, better for surfers
Getting Between Beaches
The Gold Coast beaches are relatively close to one another. You can spend the day at different beaches:
Flamingo to Conchal: 20 minutes Flamingo to Tamarindo: 45 minutes Tamarindo to Las Catalinas: 15 minutes Papagayo Bay to Flamingo: 30 minutes
Easy to explore without committing to one beach full-time.
Living on the Beach
The beauty of owning property on the Gold Coast is proximity to all these beaches. Whether you prefer the calm of Flamingo, the sophistication of Conchal, or the energy of Tamarindo, you're minutes away.
Imagine waking up in Hacienda Pinilla (privacy and luxury) with world-class beaches available within 30 minutes. That's the Gold Coast lifestyle.
